Blind Date Meme

Let's face it, sometimes it's difficult finding someone to share your time, and your heart (or maybe just your body), with. Luckily for you, you have well meaning friends. Unfortunately for you, you have well meaning friends who didn't tell you this was coming. That's right. They have taken it upon themselves (and no doubt friends of friends or family members or someone else who clearly doesn't know you) to arrange a date. Without telling you.

That's right. The dreaded blind date. Which means now you've got to get through at least a reasonable amount of time with a total stranger (or maybe not a stranger if you're particularly, well, we can't say if it's lucky or not) before you can reasonably escape. Maybe it will go well. Maybe this will be the start of the rest of your lives. Maybe you'll get laid. Maybe you'll have a horror story for the ages.

No matter what plays out, though, you're here. Might as well see just how your luck is going to play out.

How to Play
1. Post your character and canon below along with any preferences. Then go back and edit your comment with the next number in order (i.e. first TL is 1, second is 2, etc)
2. Tag other TLs. If a character isn't in normal preferences, ask if they might want a date that goes poorly instead!
3. Optionally, get yourself a truly blind experience by going here and randomly generating a number. Then find the matching TL (numbered back in step one) and enjoy your blind date.
4. For more fun, use the list in the first comment for randomized date locations!

This definitely hadn't been his idea, but he'd been talked into it and the whole idea rankled slightly, but he wasn't one to walk away from something he'd agreed to. And he also knew what Selphie would do to him if he did duck out.

But he stopped in the doorway when he saw who was sitting at the table he'd been told to look for, his gaze fixing on Nida for a moment before he finally entered.

"Nida." as he stopped at the table before settling in the seat across from the pilot.

Listen, there were a lot of risks you were taking with your life when you put yourself into Selphie's hands. Including the chance that the 'totally perfect, ideal, awesome guy you should meet' might be your boss. More than that. The boss you had been crushing on since you were, like, eleven.

A man that Nida was now staring at, paralyzed for a moment. This can't be who he was waiting for. It's just not possible. It's Squall.

"Sir," he says at last. "Is there something I can help you with."

That's what makes the most sense for this moment.

Squall exhales a breath, gaze on Nida. It's not that he hasn't seen him around or spent no time with him, but he'd never quite expected him to the person Selphie had been clamoring at him about until he'd finally agreed. He'd basically expected it to be one and done but this was different.

"....I know this was Selphie's idea so if you want to call it now, no hard feelings." Because there's no way this was actually going to work.

Oh Hyne. This was happening. It was happening.

"She's, uh... spirited. I was offering you a way out, Squall."

Because he can't believe this is happening. Selphie must have lied to him.

"I appreciate it, but I'm not leaving. She'd never let it go if I walked out." And he is actually somewhat intimidated by Selphie, not that he'd admit it to anyone. But really, anyone with a brain would probably say the same thing.

"...Not that I mind the company."

Okay, anyone who wasn't intimidated by Selphie was just plain wrong. Nida was half scared of her.

"I'm less irritating than some people?"

"You're nowhere near as irritating as some people. You're not really irritating at all." Squall was just bad at people, but at least Nida didn't leave him wanting to disappear into his quarters every time they crossed paths.

Well that's fair. He usually didn't strike most people has having enough 'presence' to really be irritating. But given his specialty before he'd taken up piloting had been intel and infiltration, it's not that shocking. Of course there hadn't been as much of a chance to use that yet, and there wasn't likely to have been during all that happened. So now he was firmly ensconced in something new.

"Imagine how ineffective I'd be as a pilot if you couldn't even stand being around long enough to give directions."

"You do a good job." Squall rolls his shoulders, glancing around the room.

"Have you been training others? You're not just going to be the pilot forever." As skilled as he'd proven to be, they needed more options and his other skills would be useful for certain missions.

He wasn't? Nida looks shocked at that news. It was where he was helpful, so surely they'd just, you know, keep him there. Though he supposed he was one of the diminished number of SeeDs now.

"I hadn't yet. I should probably start recruiting for that. Selphie's forbidden from it."

"Selphie is absolutely forbidden. So are Zell and Irvine. I'd recommend Xu or Quistis although they might have some better suggestions among the cadets." Squall glances up when a waitress comes over, orders something to drink.

"Do you want any food?"

Oh god, Zell would be bad too. Nida hasn't interacted with Irvine basically at all so he really doesn't know why Squall is negating that one.

"If Raijin was here I'd suggest him," he admits with a shrug. "He was pretty reliable with this stuff. But that isn't something most people would agree to."

As for the server, he orders a tea and considers.

"If it is all the same to you, I could eat, yes."

"I'm not most people." And reasons to bring those three back to Garden are something he's been working on anyway.

"Order anything you like."

"That you aren't. Never have been, sir," he agrees. He might be a little too well trained by Garden to use that word.

Still, he's happy to look at the menu because it means he doesn't have to think about it too hard.

"Squall." He corrects Nida before glancing over the menu himself although only for a moment before settling on something to eat.

"You're not on duty here."

That's... A very fair point. Nida nods.

"Sorry. I guess Instructor Aki was very effective at drumming in the 'proper forms of address' thing."

Or maybe he's got a tiny bit of hero worship that could be easily wiped out if he interacted with Squall more. It clearly hadn't lasted for the rest of his team.

"You don't have to apologize. I'm in charge at Garden so it's understandable, but you're allowed to use my name. I kind of prefer it, actually." He hadn't really chosen to be commander after all and having people who'd grown up with him calling him sir was a little weird.

"Alright then, Squall," Nida offers with a bit of a smile. See, he can do this. "Guess I just... I didn't really expect you here. I would have been less shocked if Zell walked up to the table."

Because that made more sense than Selphie arranging this. Unless it was just an attempt to get Squall out of his work more often. That is fair too.
