They're late. Normally this was not something that would worry David. He was used to his partners in literal crime being caught up in complicated business. Tonight was a tricky sort of theft, following rumors that Balthier had not been able to resist. And David had been forced to stay behind with the Strahl. The hoverbike was just better for two, and David needed to work with Nono to repair a strut that had been worrying them.
But they're late, and that worries David. He asks Nono to stay behind and then heads out into the city... Just in time to watch the new Consul taking his partners off in irons. He watches Balthier stop to be a courteous man trying to prevent a scene, and of course he catches sight of that annoying Ba'Gamnan watching it all.
Things are clearly FUBAR. And so begins quite a bit of wait. He's not supposed to chase them down immediately. David's supposed to give them a few days to let Fran haul Balthier out of their messes. After that point he is supposed to act. When there's a chance that Balthier's identity has been determined and is being thrown back to his father. Put into a position where his father could try and use Balthier to get at David again.
Three days. That's how long he can wait before seeking them out. Three days of hell.
At least he doesn't have to fuss around the airship waiting. They had an agreement, and so David sets out through Rabanastre to the Sandsea. He's too anxious to cook, he'll just work through the food on the airship, and that's not going to be forgiven when Balthier gets back. Anxiety cooking is a far loftier cost in this world than it is back home. So he waits, passing far too much time at the Sandsea, waiting, hoping. Every time he hears someone walk in he looks to the entrance, hoping for two familiar forms.
And there, at last, they are. Balthier and Fran. David rises from the table he's taken on the upper level and goes to pull an extra chair over. These two owe him quite the story to explain what happened. How they got arrested, how they broke out, how they got back here. And whether they managed to get the target prize.
"You're late," he says when Fran finishes her climb of the stairs and moves closer.
"We acquired problems," the woman says before sitting down. She knows better than to explain more when David was clearly going to be more stressed over Balthier.
