Blind Date Meme



Let's face it, sometimes it's difficult finding someone to share your time, and your heart (or maybe just your body), with. Luckily for you, you have well meaning friends. Unfortunately for you, you have well meaning friends who didn't tell you this was coming. That's right. They have taken it upon themselves (and no doubt friends of friends or family members or someone else who clearly doesn't know you) to arrange a date. Without telling you.

That's right. The dreaded blind date. Which means now you've got to get through at least a reasonable amount of time with a total stranger (or maybe not a stranger if you're particularly, well, we can't say if it's lucky or not) before you can reasonably escape. Maybe it will go well. Maybe this will be the start of the rest of your lives. Maybe you'll get laid. Maybe you'll have a horror story for the ages.

No matter what plays out, though, you're here. Might as well see just how your luck is going to play out.

How to Play

1. Post your character and canon below along with any preferences. Then go back and edit your comment with the next number in order (i.e. first TL is 1, second is 2, etc)

2. Tag other TLs. If a character isn't in normal preferences, ask if they might want a date that goes poorly instead!

3. Optionally, get yourself a truly blind experience by going here and randomly generating a number. Then find the matching TL (numbered back in step one) and enjoy your blind date.

4. For more fun, use the list in the first comment for randomized date locations!

Why would I think you're dangerous?

Exactly. So you can explore me without worry!

[burning_youth]

[Warren has to laugh at that.]

And what if I'm the dangerous one here?

You don't seem very dangerous.

[burning_youth]

[Warren chuckles and shakes his head.]

Well, you don't know me well yet. But maybe I've got surprises that people might assume is dangerous around me.

[dead_tongue]

Like what?

[burning_youth]

[The fire of the candle on the table leaps higher.]

Oh, Jesus! Did you see that?!

[Yeah, he's... not catching on.]

Yeah. I did.

[Warren doesn't mess with the fire anymore.]

So, anything on the menu look good?

[dead_tongue]

Weird.

[He looks around, half expecting a ghost. But there's nothing.]

Oh! Uhm. Gosh, what would you recommend?

Honestly, the whole menu is pretty great. I love this place. I know the owners. If you want, I could ask for a sampler. They don't normally do that.

Well, who am I to say no to that?

[Warren smiles at that. He knows the guy should enjoy it.]

Alright. Then let me just get the server.

[Oh, that's a super fair point. He really should share.]

Um, I'm a college student, I'm focused on English Lit, and my mom is, needless to say, disappointed. I work in the food service industry to support myself, my best friend has a green thumb like you'd never believe, and I've been known to dole out thoughtful advice from time to time over tables like this. How's that for a start?

I'm a Fine Arts major - to me an English degree is practical.

[Iggy smiles.]

I think it's a great start. And there's nothing wrong with food service.

See, in my book Fine Arts majors are creating something. An English Lit major makes themselves off of their analysis and critique and breaking down of other people's works. It's vaguely constructive, but only through deconstruction, by peeling away the layers of creation to find the squishy bits under them.

[And here he is, getting a bit too into the talk.]

No, there isn't. I don't mind it, except when people are assholes. Which is far too often sadly.

True, but I think you're discounting the importance of media interpretation and criticism! Why create if people don't spend time drawing meaning from said creations?

Yeah, true. That's why I never made it long in that branch of customer service.

See, now I can respect that point of view. In fact, there is something to be said for the sustaining of criticism as media literacy seems to be falling off in online spaces, and in those spaces there are some really interesting bits of scholarship going on.

[See, he could talk about this for hours.]

Oh, Customer service is other people. And other people are hell.

I would love to hear more about that research, no lie.

See, I like other people! I'm just really bad at retail and server positions. I still work in customer service, I suppose. It's just much more personal.
